Watermelon turtle tutorial that is super easy and sure to please!
I saw a picture of a watermelon turtle while flipping thru Pinterest one day. I didn’t save it but decided to try and recreate it from my memory.
It turned out pretty cute!
Begin making your watermelon turtle
Start by cutting the turtle almost in half lengthwise. Leave one half a little thicker this will be the belly of the turtle.
Next using a melon baller scoop out all the flesh into little balls. Scoop from both the main “belly” part of melon and the “lid”.
To have a little color contrast I used the melon baller on a cantaloupe too.
Watermelon turtle carving tutorial
For the turtle shell, I cut the “lid” section out of the top piece. You will have extra pieces leftover so set them aside.
I carved “ancient turtle markings” haha into the oval circle with a zester tool in my kitchen drawer.
You could probably use any type of a sharp scrapping tool to get this look but I used my peeler tool.
I used the little round edges of it to scrape off the skin in areas to make designs in the “shell”.
I bought this at Ikea but here is a link to a similar one here.
Be as creative as you want there is no rules on this.
Cutting out the turtle legs and head
With the leftover pieces I cut out 4 little legs. (Sorry my picture is a bit blurry). On each foot I cut a jagged edge or little triangles at one end to make them look webbed.
I cut out an oval shaped piece for the head and a little triangle piece for the tail.
The eyes were made by placing 2 large chocolate chips on the head with some syrup!
It really looked so adorable! My family made me a watermelon birthday cake one year because my birthday is in July. You can see it here.
I have also made a pirate ship out of a watermelon too.
What kind of things have you made with watermelon?
