For my granddaughters space themed birthday party I carved a space creature themed fruit tray. Carving the space creature head out of a watermelon was fun! The process is really quite easy and I will show you how.
I have carved watermelon into a cute turtle that you can see here and a pirate ship is easy to carve out of a watermelon too. One could say I love to play with my food. haha

One medium sized watermelon (Not too big or you won’t have room for the rest of the fruit)
Wilton Blue candy melting disk (for the eye)
Fruit- I used cantaloupe, pineapple, strawberries and grapes. (choose your favorites)
Sharp knives– (I used a small Pairing knife to cut the mouth)
Carving the space creature head
To begin creating the space creature head I cut a 1/4 of the watermelon off and put it aside. I used the top 3/4 of the watermelon for the head. Next scoop out all the watermelon out of the head and cut into chunks.
Tip- I used a paper towel inside the watermelon to absorb some of the leftover juice from the watermelon.
Now it is time to carve the mouth of the space creature. I used a pairing knife and as a result it cut the mouth like butter!
Tip- Draw mouth on watermelon to know where to cut.
Cut eyes and antennae for space creature
Next it is time to cut the large eye on the front of the watermelon I used the leftover 1/4 piece of watermelon. Slice a round piece off from the bottom. Use scissors to make it as round as you want.
Toothpicks were used to attach it the watermelon. The blue pupil is a blue melting disk. I attached it to the eye with a toothpick.
Using the pairing knife I also cut out a little eyebrow and attached it with a toothpick.
To make the antennas, I cut slices from the left over piece of watermelon. Attach them with toothpicks all over the top of the head. It was fun to play around these.
Assembling Fruit Tray
I used a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil. I thought the aluminum foil had a “space age” feel to it. The cookie sheet was perfect because it held the juice from all the fruit. No spilling allowed right?
Place the space creature head at the back of the tray. Finally cut up all the rest of the fruit into chunks and place on the cookie sheet. Actually I cut the strawberries in half leaving the green tops.
To bring in a little “universe” to the platter I used a large star and moon cookie cutter to cut the watermelon. Just by adding that little touch made it look so cute!
Googly eyed toothpics
For the googly eyed toothpicks, I bought the candy google eyes and attached them to the toothpick with a drop of melted white chocolate.
