Let the kids create their own placemats…..tutorial

Madeline’s tutorial on creating placemats with the kids.

My kids and I had a wonderful time creating placemats together so I would like to share the tutorial with you.

Here are the supplies you will need, neon colored poster board, markers to decorate the placemats with (you can use stickers, paint, stamps – whatever your kids enjoy crafting with), fun washi tape and clear contact paper. If you would like to trace the place setting to act as a guide for your kids when setting the table you will also need a plate, glass, and silverware to trace.

Then with your help trace the silverware in their proper places…forks on the left and knife and spoon on the right. The cup goes on the right above the the knife. (I forgot to trace the cup – my little ones were getting a little unruly with the markers).
Like so…..

Then with your help trace the silverware in their proper places…forks on the left and knife and spoon on the right. The cup goes on the right above the the knife.

Then let the kiddies decorate their plates in a fun way. I love this picture of my granddaughter concentrating on creating her masterpiece 🙂

Add the tape on the sides for decoration.

Initially it was hard for me to allow them to just have at it. I thought these were going on my table and so they needed to look nice but as I saw the fun they were having and the pride they took in their work I realized that the masterpiece was in their hands. So let go if you are anything like me, and enjoy your children’s scribbles and current level of creativity. They love the whole creative process.

This project is not only fun but it teaches them the proper way to set the table and now they can now do it all by themselves!

Even little ones 3 and 4 can now take on the responsibility of setting the table and they feel so happy to be of help.

Empowering your kids to be able to do things for themselves is a great gift you can give them and this project is just one way you can do that. Have fun and set their creativity free!

Karins Kottage

Welcome to Karins Kottage! There is always something fun going on! You would think after becoming an empty nester couple that our nest would be very quiet and empty but our Kottage nest is usually more full than what we started out with! You might find me hosting a birthday party or graduation party and a baby shower on the same weekend or a big outdoor get together with 25 of our friends and family in the backyard or maybe I might be in the kitchen trying out a new recipe for my hubby and I to grill on the BBQ for a quiet night for the two of us. I am passionate about entertaining and setting a beautiful table! I may or may not have an addiction to cloth napkins and fun salad plates oh and goblets too! I think I will always have a home decorating DIY project in the works as long as my hubby is on board with me haha. We have painted A LOT in the 6 homes we have owned in the 35 years that we have been married as well as re-done multiple pieces of furniture, added wall and ceiling treatments, replaced lights, bathroom fixtures and even tiled floors! I have sewn what seems like a million window treatments for our home as well as for family, made slipcovers, and duvets and even a formal dress or two!
