Ingredients:

  • 1 baguette, sliced into 1″ pieces
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1-2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 jar fig jam
  • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp butter or olive oil
  • Kosher salt
  • Drizzle of balsamic glaze (optional)

Directions:

  1. Begin by toasting the baguette slices. Drizzle them with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt, then pop them under the broiler until lightly toasted. Keep a close eye on them to prevent any unexpected surprises – we want golden perfection!

2. While the bread works its magic in the oven, let’s focus on the star of the show – those caramelized onions. In a hot frying pan with butter or olive oil, sauté thinly sliced onions with a sprinkle of brown sugar until they become beautifully translucent. Add the balsamic vinegar and sauté for an additional 1 to 2 minutes.

The aroma will have your guests salivating!

3. Now, it’s assembly time! Spread about 1 tablespoon of creamy ricotta cheese on each toasted bread slice.

4. Top it off with a teaspoon (or more, if you’re feeling generous) of luscious fig jam and a generous portion of those decadent caramelized onions.

These delectable bites are not only perfect for New Year’s get-togethers but any gathering where you want to impress without spending hours in the kitchen. The combination of savory ricotta, sweet fig, and the richness of caramelized onions creates a flavor symphony that’ll leave your guests asking for more!

I personally served mine straight from the cookie sheet, embracing that “rustic” charm haha. However, feel free to showcase your culinary masterpiece on a pretty plate or a tiered stand for that extra “wow” factor.

So, there you have it – a super easy appetizer that screams sophistication and is guaranteed to be a hit at your next shindig. Happy hosting!
