How to style houndstooth pencil skirt

I have worn this black and white houndstooth skirt for many years now as it has stood the test of time. A houndstooth pencil skirt is a timeless wardrobe staple that you can style in a variety of ways. Black and white is so easy to work with. It goes with every color imaginable. I have found pencil skirts to be the most flattering style because of the straight cut and hems at the knee or right below. Pencil skirts elongate and make you look and feel slimmer and are the most comfortable to wear all day. I am all about that!

The very first pencil skirt was designed my Christian Dior in 1947! It did not become a fashion staple until the 1950’s and 60’s. It became known as a smart women’s uniform. Even today the pencil skirt is a women’s office staple. I don’t work in an office but I do attend church and occasional business meetings where my houndstooth black and white pencil skirt fits the bill.

How to style a houndstooth pencil skirt

One way to do this is to pair a houndstooth pencil skirt with a silky blouse, boots, and a scarf in the fall and winter. This look is perfect for a day out shopping, a night out on the town, or even a formal event. To begin, choose a houndstooth pencil skirt that is the perfect length for your body.

My skirt hits a little bit above the knee and looks great with solid black tights. A midi length skirt is also a great choice for most body types. Make sure that the skirt has a great fit and is comfortable. I like pencil skirts that have some spandex or stretch to the fabric for easy movement.

The houndstooth print adds a classic touch to the look and can be dressed up or down. I opted to pair my plaid skirt with a silky gold button down blouse. The gold hue helps to bring out the houndstooth pattern and give the look an elevated feel. Choose a blouse with a structured fit and a few details such as a collar, buttons, or a bow. This will give the look a polished feel.

For a dressed down look you could wear a fun pull over sweatshirt or sweater with a denim blouse underneath. I am wearing a black pullover sweater over my gold blouse for warmth. To break up the long black arms I push up my sleeves a bit to show off the gold cuffs. If I was to wear a more casual denim shirt underneath I would push up the sweat shirt sleeves a bit more and let the color of the denim blouse show.

A fitted jacket is another way to style a pencil skirt. The fitted jacket helps to create curves especially if you don’t have any like me.

What shoes to wear with pencil skirts?

To complete my look I add a pair of black boots. These can be ankle boots, knee-high boots, or even over-the-knee boots. The boots will help to keep the look grounded and bring everything together. My black boots with a low heel add a touch of sophistication to the look and best of all warmth and comfort. If you’re feeling daring, you can also opt for a pair of statement boots such as animal print or metallic. I prefer to use neutral colors in my boots. I think my granddaughter would love something a little more daring but I think I will pass on that for now 😉

High heels always give a very chic look to the pencil skirt. If I could wear high heels I would but my back says no way. Kitten heels are my best friend these days giving the pretty feminine look without causing foot or back issues.

Flats are another cute option to style a houndstooth pencil skirt. I like pointed toe flats in all colors and fun patterns like leopard.

Accessories for your black and white houndstooth skirt

With the right accessories, you can create a timeless and classic look.

Add a scarf to the look. A scarf is a great way to add texture, color, and pattern to the look. Choose a scarf that complements the houndstooth pattern and the gold blouse. A scarf with a floral print, animal print, or a geometric pattern will add a fun touch to the look. The final result is a timeless and sophisticated look that is perfect for any occasion. My gold plaid scarf with the stripe of black and cream add the right amount of boldness to my outfit. The combination of houndstooth and a large plaid create interest without looking garish.

Jewelry is another way to elevate your look. I chose a long gold chain with a pendant. Using a long chain like this helps to break up my broad shoulders and create length in my torso. A statement piece of jewelry is a great way to add a little sophistication and elegance to the outfit. Here is another black and white skirt outfit I put together with a belted green cardigan, white blouse and a bold piece of jewelry.

Where to find pencil skirts?

I have found pencil skirts at Old Navy, Ann Taylor, Jcrew, Ralph Lauren and many other shops. You can even find cute pencil skirts at thrift stores too. If it is your first time trying a pencil skirt, try a few different lengths and patterns to see which ones you like best. Also make sure to find fabrics that have some stretch to it. A side zipper is very common in pencil skirts but I have worn many with back zippers or no zippers and elastic waistbands. All are comfortable to wear.

You might find me hosting a birthday party or graduation party and a baby shower on the same weekend or a big outdoor get together with 25 of our friends and family in the backyard or maybe I might be in the kitchen trying out a new recipe for my hubby and I to grill on the BBQ for a quiet night for the two of us. I am passionate about entertaining and setting a beautiful table! I may or may not have an addiction to cloth napkins and fun salad plates oh and goblets too! I think I will always have a home decorating DIY project in the works as long as my hubby is on board with me haha. We have painted A LOT in the 6 homes we have owned in the 35 years that we have been married as well as re-done multiple pieces of furniture, added wall and ceiling treatments, replaced lights, bathroom fixtures and even tiled floors!
