Happy Fashion Friday, my friends! Today, I’m styling the classic black pleated skirt two ways. This skirt is a staple that every woman over 50 should have in her wardrobe. This piece is incredibly adaptable, and I’m excited to show you how I styled it in two distinct ways. One dressed up and the other dressed down. Whether you’re headed to a special event or just running errands, this skirt has got you covered.
How to style a black pleated skirt in a dressy look? Let’s start with a black sweater and heels. I paired my pleated skirt with a white t-shirt, black sweater with gold buttons, and a black belt with a gold buckle. The gold elevates the look to make it look dressy even with a white t-shirt.
Now, tucking in a t-shirt might not be the best look on its own. Especially if you have a fuller waistline like mine. But that’s where layering and angles come in!
By putting on the black sweater over the white t-shirt and buttoning just the top button, I created angles. I left the sweater open to form a flattering triangle of the white t-shirt and black and gold belt, which gives the illusion of a defined waistline. Perfect for those of us who need a little help in that area!
For accessories, I added a chunky gold and clear baubled necklace, simple gold hoops, and some gold bangles. The gold accents tie everything together and bring a touch of luxury to the look. A small black purse with a gold closure and chain adds just the right amount of sophistication. And speaking of accessories, I was once told by a modeling teacher to spend more money on accessories like belts, jewelry, and handbags to elevate an outfit. But you know what? I don’t think it’s necessary! As long as the pieces look nice, it doesn’t matter how much they cost—what do you think?
To finish off the look, I slipped on a pair of black kitten heels. They’re elegant yet comfortable, making them perfect for a dressy occasion. I love how this outfit turned out—elegant, flattering, and ideal for a night out or a special event.
Now, let’s switch things up with a more casual style. I kept the white t-shirt and swapped the black sweater for a jean jacket. Just like before, I only buttoned the top button and wore the same necklace over the top of the jacket.
The belt and gold jewelry stayed the same, but I traded the kitten heels for my Adidas white sneakers with black stripes. Such a fun, casual look! Just by changing out the sweater for a jean jacket and the heels for sneakers, I created a completely new vibe.
I also experimented with a cream and black striped jacket for another casual take, and even borrowed my hubby’s denim button-down.
I first wore it open like a longer jacket for a laid-back day with sneakers, and then I tried tucking it in with the belt.
While I didn’t love the tucked-in look on its own (being short-waisted can be a challenge!), I layered it with my maxi raincoat, and suddenly the outfit worked.
These outfit ideas are perfect for traveling because you can pack fewer items and get more wear out of each piece. I’d also suggest adding some black and white pants, like my favorite palazzo pants, to pair with the white t-shirt and black sweater or the denim jacket. That would give you at least five different outfits from just a few items!
Speaking of raincoats, my daughter is selling these fabulous oversized ones. They’re super stylish and functional, but be sure to size down by one or two sizes for the best fit. Best of all they are only $60!! Get one before she sells out.
So, what do you think of these outfits? Which of my black pleated skirt styled 2 ways did you like? Do you prefer the dressed-up look or the casual one? Leave me a comment—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Oh I almost forgot I have actually styled my black pleated skirt 4 other ways that you can see here. It really is such a fun skirt to wear multiple ways!
Happy styling!
