How to Style Sunglasses That Don’t Age You

As we get older, taking extra care of your eyes is essential. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe and irreversible vision loss in people over the age of 55, and 65% of those who suffer from this condition are women. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other visual impairments often affect women due to hormonal changes and the simple fact that women live longer. As such, you want to ensure you take care of yourself in the years when your eyes become more sensitive.

Sunglasses are a great and fashionable way to protect yourself from developing many vision problems, especially as AMD and similar conditions occur more often in people exposed to sunlight for longer periods. This practical measure can also be a lot of fun once you find ways to style your eyewear to make you look more vibrant.

Find a timeless style

The first thing you want to do is pin down a style that feels timeless. You don’t want to fall for the fads that come and go, as this will make your look seem more dated. It’s also worth noting that many beauty gurus state that dated styles that can be associated with distinct eras also tend to affect how you are perceived.

Thankfully, avoiding the trends doesn’t mean you must go for something bland or generic. Women’s sunglasses are diverse and have plenty of beautiful options that look as good today as they did 30 years ago. Similarly, they will likely look just as chic and well-designed 30 years from now. For instance, the Ray-Ban Aviator Classic has been around for decades but is still considered a fashionable accessory for people of all ages. If you’re looking for something more feminine, Versace Biggie can give that Hollywood red carpet vibe that works with understated outerwear. Just because you are older doesn’t mean you have to go for something boring. You can go bold and express your aesthetic easily with timeless designs by the likes of Tory Burch and more.

Find a color palette that suits you

Colors can impact your look a lot, for better or worse. They can wash you out or make you look older than you are, too. The first thing you want to consider is your skin color and undertones, as these will affect how sunglasses look on you. Some apps make this easier to figure out, with My Best Colors and Colorwise analyzing the right shades and hues that are most flattering for your natural coloration.

These measurements are based on seasonal color analysis, perfect for creating a throughline between your accessories and garments. You can find your favorite spring dress and match it with a contrasting pair of sunglasses that brings out your natural glow. Since this theory is applied to other clothing, you can mix and match with ease as you know you’ll be able to create a cohesive look with colors that suit you. Have fun creating new looks with sunglasses.

Find the right frame for your face shape

Styling your glasses also comes down to matching the best frames to your face shape. If you have a flattering pair of shades that brings out your best features, you will naturally exude more youth and vitality. Generally speaking, the guidelines are wayfarers and cat eyes for heart-shaped faces; rounded, aviators, and curved frames for square faces; oversized, cat-eye, and wayfarer frames for oval faces; and square, rectangular, and butterfly shapes for round faces.

In addition, you should use the same measuring guide for glasses when picking sunglasses. Ill-fitting eyewear products can cause discomfort, dizziness, or blurred vision, which can be risk factors as you age, so you want something custom-fit to your head and face. Optometrists recommend measuring your nose bridge and the width between your temples on top of figuring out your face shape so you can find the right frame thickness, size, and temple length. This will ensure that you not only look good but feel comfortable after wearing your sunglasses for an extended period.

I usually buy inexpensive glasses as I tend to break them every so often. I try to balance not wearing them since your eyes are a great way for your body to get Vitamin D and wearing them when it is bright.
