Let’s talk about fashion advice for short waisted, broad shouldered and long legged women advice. Growing up, I didn’t think much about my long legs, short waist, and broad shoulders (as you can see in this photo of 14-year-old me!). It makes me laugh looking at this photo, I have very long limbs and a very short torso. Back then, I could get away with tucking in my shirt without much thought. But now that I’m ahem….older, rounder, and wiser, dressing my body has become more of a strategy game—and one I’ve come to enjoy.

If you’ve ever struggled with similar body quirks like a short waist, round belly, broad shoulders, or even a sway back, I’ve got you covered.
Over the years, I’ve learned a few tricks to camouflage these areas while playing up my better features. Let’s dive into some tips that will help you feel confident and stylish no matter what!
Fashion Advice- Creating Length and Lines for Short Waisted Gals
The goal here is to create the illusion of a longer torso while softening the shoulders.
V-Necks to the Rescue
V-neck tops are my absolute go-to for opening up the neckline and creating a vertical line that visually lengthens the torso. Pair that with a jean jacket for even more magic.

The French Tuck (Game Changer!)
Gone are the days of fully tucking my shirts into pants like I did as a teenager (hello, awkward proportions!). Now, I swear by the French tuck. Just tuck in the front of your shirt and let the fabric drape slightly over the waistband—it softens the waistline and creates a flattering curve. Layers Are Your Best Friend

Layering is a lifesaver for us short-waisted gals
A longer T-shirt or white blouse under a sweatshirt, with just a peek of fabric showing at the bottom, is an easy way to add length. Throw on a structured jacket—like a denim or utility jacket with vertical seams—and watch the transformation.

Longer Jackets Are Key
Whether it’s a tailored blazer or a lightweight duster, longer jackets add length to the torso and pull any outfit together. My black blazer is a wardrobe hero—it looks fantastic with jeans, trousers, or even a skirt.

Outerwear: Making Coats Work for Your Short Waist
Coats can be tricky, but when you find the right one, it’s a game changer!
Go Long and Lean
A long coat is magical for pulling together any outfit. Wear it open to create vertical lines that elongate your figure or close it and add a fun scarf. Avoid belted coats unless you tie the belt at the back—it keeps the coat open and prevents that bulky “bathrobe” look (you know what I’m talking about!).

i actually do show a long trench coat belted in my post here and it actually looks pretty good. The proportions are different because it is so long and it balances out the look rather than a shorter coat belted.
I am also wearing pleated pants which I normally never wear. Sometimes you just have to try certain styles and see how they work.

Cinched Utility Jackets
I have a red utility jacket with an adjustable waist that’s perfect for adding a little definition where I need it. It also helps create the illusion of a longer torso—win-win!

Sweaters: Know Your Fabrics and Fit
Oh, sweaters. They can be tricky, but here’s what works for me:
Avoid Bulk
While I adore a cozy chunky sweater, they don’t always adore me back. Thin knits or sweaters with patterns work much better because they break up the broadness of my shoulders.

Break Up Solids
Solid sweaters in one color can make me look wider than I’d like. Wearing one over a collared shirt, adding a long necklace, scarf, or jacket over the top makes all the difference. Stripes are fun but I have to be choosey so I usually pick a thinner sweater.

Jeans and Pants: Flattering the Bottom Half
Now, let’s talk about jeans and pants, because they’re the foundation of so many great outfits.
- No Pleats, Please!
Flat-front pants are a must for me—pleats just add more bulk on my tummy where I don’t need it. - Back Pockets Are a Blessing
Having a flat rear end can feel a bit uninspiring. Jeans with back pockets help create some shape back there. - High-Waisted Jeans Can Work
I know high-waisted jeans can be intimidating, but when styled right, they’re amazing. Just pair them with a French tuck or a longer top to balance things out. - Flowy Summer Pants
In the summer, I live in lightweight, flowy pants and linen tops. They skim over the body without clinging and feel so breezy and comfortable.

Accessories: The Finishing Touches
Accessory fashion advice – where you can have a little fun and add some sparkle to your outfit!
Scarves for the Win
Scarves are a fantastic way to break up the broadness of the shoulders. White tank, gold cardigan, scarf and jacket to break up my broad shoulders and bring attention up towards my face not my stomach.

I love to wear a bright colored scarf in the winter to bring in some color on a dark winter day. See the rest of my outfit idea here.

Long Necklaces
These are lifesavers for creating vertical lines.
For this outfit I tried to match a Pinterest outfit that had a long necklace. Just this one accessory can make a huge difference. See how I copied the Pinterest outfit here.
