One of the things I loved most about packing a capsule wardrobe for Italy was seeing how a few simple pieces could completely change depending on the weather.
On this particular day in Puglia, I wore my white pants with a blue-and-white striped T-shirt and lightweight white zip sweatshirt. It was such an easy, comfortable outfit for wandering through the narrow streets, stopping to look inside beautiful churches, listening to street musicians, and taking in those incredible views along the coast.

And then the wind showed up!
White Pants Were Easier to Wear in Italy Than I Expected
I know white pants might not be the first thing you think of for a 17 day fall trip to Italy, but I was so glad I packed them.
They instantly made an outfit feel a little brighter and more polished, and they worked beautifully with all the blues I brought along on the trip.
A blue-and-white striped T-shirt with white pants is about as classic as it gets. It felt very coastal and very Italian without trying too hard.

I added my lightweight white zip sweatshirt for another layer. I really liked having something that could be zipped up when I was chilly and easily taken off when the sun came out.
That was the story of October in Italy — layer, unlayer, repeat!
Then Came the Denim Jacket
By the time we were walking near the water, it had become quite windy and noticeably cooler.
I was VERY grateful I had tossed my denim jacket into my amazing AWAY suitcase.

This is exactly why I always recommend bringing at least one jacket that works with almost everything when you’re traveling.
The denim looked great over the white-on-white outfit, added just enough warmth, and gave the whole look a little more structure.
I ended up loving the combination:
White pants + white zip sweatshirt + denim jacket + white sneakers
Simple, comfortable and easy to walk in all day.

And because everything was fairly neutral, I could add my little crossbody bag and sunglasses without feeling like I had too much going on.
Wandering Through Beautiful Italian Streets
One of my favorite things to do in Italy is simply walk.
We wandered through tiny stone streets with whitewashed walls, balconies and beautiful bursts of bougainvillea or grape vines spilling overhead.

Those are the moments when I am especially happy I packed comfortable clothes and shoes.
You never quite know where the day will take you.
Maybe you’ll find a little shop tucked down an alley.

Maybe you’ll hear a saxophone player performing outside a beautiful church.
Maybe you’ll stop for lunch and end up sitting in the sunshine much longer than you planned.
Or maybe you’ll round a corner and suddenly see that spectacular turquoise water crashing against the rocky coastline.
Those unplanned moments are often my favorite part of traveling.

Comfortable Shoes Are Non-Negotiable
I wore my new Cloud 6 white sneakers with this outfit, and they were perfect for walking over the uneven stone streets.
Italy is definitely not the place where I want to sacrifice comfort for cute shoes.
The good news is that sneakers look perfectly natural with almost everything now — dresses, jeans, cropped pants and even more polished outfits.
For me, comfortable shoes are one of the most important parts of a travel capsule.
If my feet hurt, I’m not going to enjoy exploring nearly as much!
Why I Loved This Outfit
This outfit checked all my travel boxes:
It was comfortable.
It worked for lots of walking.

It could handle changing temperatures.
And most importantly, I still felt pulled together.
I think that’s one of the biggest lessons I learned from packing for 17 days in one carry-on.
You don’t need dozens of outfits.
You need simple pieces that layer well and work together.
The white pants worked with several tops I packed. The white sweatshirt layered over T-shirts and under jackets. And the denim jacket went with just about everything.
That’s exactly what I want from a travel wardrobe.
Would I Pack White Pants for Italy Again?
Absolutely.
In fact, they turned out to be much more versatile than I expected.
I wore them with sneakers during the day, but they could easily have been dressed up with a button-down blouse, sandals or my black Mary Jane flats.
And there’s something about white pants with blue that just feels right when you’re standing next to that gorgeous Italian sea.

If you’re planning a trip to Italy — especially during a shoulder season like spring or fall — my biggest advice is to think in layers rather than complete outfits.
Start with a simple base.
Add a sweatshirt.
Bring a jacket.
And be ready for the weather to change.
Because chances are it will!
But when the view looks like this, a little wind is certainly not going to stop me from exploring.
