17-Day Italy Carry-On Capsule Wardrobe for Women Over 50

How I’m Packing a Carry-On Capsule Wardrobe for 17 Days in Italy

Packing for 17 days in Italy with only a carry-on sounds a little crazy, doesn’t it?

Especially when the trip includes everything from boating on Lake Maggiore and e-biking along the Adriatic to sightseeing, dinners out, church, beach days and lots and lots of walking!

But after several trips to Italy, I’ve learned something important: I don’t need more clothes. I need clothes that work harder. You can shop all these pieces at the bottom of this post.

So this time I’m creating a simple travel capsule wardrobe filled with pieces I already know I’ll wear, comfortable shoes I can actually walk in, and layers that will take me through changing October weather.

And yes—I tried everything on before it went into the suitcase!

My Italy Carry-On Capsule Wardrobe

My biggest goal was to keep the colors fairly neutral so almost everything could be mixed and matched.

I’m building the capsule around black, white, denim and beige, with a few pretty pops of color. That means I can change the entire look of an outfit simply by switching a top, adding a jacket or changing my shoes. I had Chatgpt create this fun graphic of most of the things I am bringing. It did take some liberties and a few things I am not going to take but you get the jest.

The bottoms

I’m keeping this category small because bottoms can usually be worn several times before they need washing.

I’m packing my:

  • Skinny blue jeans
  • Black linen pants
  • Beige golf/travel pants
  • Black straight-leg lounge pants
  • Black-and-white tiny-check sport skirt

The sport skirt is especially useful because I can wear it for an active day, over my swimsuit, or for a casual lunch.

And yes, I’m still taking my skinny jeans! Trends come and go, but when you’re traveling, I think you should wear the jeans that you feel good in.

Tops That Mix and Match

This is where I can get quite a few different outfits without taking up much suitcase space.

I’m bringing a white T-shirt, black T-shirt, blue-and-white striped T-shirt, tan linen button-down and light blue linen button-down.

I also have my berry-colored tunic-length sweatshirt, which gives all those neutrals a little life.

One of my favorite travel tricks is using button-down shirts as both tops and lightweight layers. Wear one buttoned with pants one day, then wear it open over a T-shirt another day.

Suddenly one shirt is doing two jobs.

The Layers Are Going to Be Important

October in Italy can mean warm sunshine one afternoon and chilly or rainy weather the next, particularly since we’re traveling through different regions.

This delicious Coldwater Creek raspberry sweatshirt is the perfect pop of color for all my outifts and can be easily layered with the raincoat over the top.

Instead of packing one bulky coat, I’m bringing layers I can add and remove throughout the day.

My denim jacket works with practically everything. I also have a lightweight white zip-up sweatshirt and my packable beige rain jacket.

I have a another travel capsule that I put together for 22 days all in a carry-on here.

I’m especially excited about the Coldwater Creek rain jacket because it gives me weather protection without taking up half of my suitcase.

And I can layer it right over my berry top, jeans and sneakers for a cute sightseeing outfit.

Two Dresses That Can Do So Much

I’m bringing two maxi shirt dresses—one black and one beige.

I LOVE a shirt dress for travel.

I can wear one buttoned as a dress for dinner or church, but I can also wear it open like a long duster over pants and a T-shirt.

My black shirt dress can even work as a swimsuit cover-up.

That means two dresses can potentially give me six or more completely different looks.

That’s exactly the kind of clothing that earns a spot in my carry-on!

Let’s Talk About the Shoes

Shoes may be the hardest part of packing light because I always want options.

But shoes are heavy and take up so much room!

I’m bringing:

Beige knit slip-on sneakers for lots of walking.

White sneakers with a little cheetah detail for another comfortable walking option.

Leather slides with a gold buckle that can dress things up a bit for dinner.

Black knit Mary Jane flats when I want something nicer than a sneaker.

And my lightweight water sandals for boating, the beach and water activities.

The rule I’m trying very hard to follow is:

Every pair needs a specific purpose AND needs to work with several outfits.

No “maybe I’ll wear these” shoes allowed. 😂

A Few Extras That Make the Outfits Feel Different

This is the fun part!

Accessories take up almost no room but can make repeat outfits look completely different.

I’m taking a long necklace, sunglasses, one scarf, a white ball cap and a packable straw crossbody bag.

I also love bringing a hat for Italy. Besides being practical on sunny days, somehow a hat makes the simplest outfit feel a little more European vacation-ish. 😉

Dressing for Our Actual Itinerary

This was probably the biggest change in how I approached packing.

Instead of thinking:

What clothes do I want to take?

I started thinking:

What will I actually be doing?

We’ll be visiting the Borromean Islands and Stresa, spending time around Lake Maggiore, heading to our beloved Casoli in Abruzzo, traveling through Puglia, boating, e-biking, going to the beach, attending church, exploring villages and eating plenty of wonderful lunches and dinners.

Some days may even require two outfits.

I might spend the morning boating or biking and then want to freshen up before dinner.

That’s where the capsule really helps. I don’t need an entirely separate evening wardrobe. I can change one or two pieces and create another outfit.

For example:

Day: Sport skirt + Tankini top + White blouse + Sneakers + Straw hat
Dinner: Black golf pants + White blouse + Striped T + Necklace + White Sneakers

Black tankini and golf skirt -up for an Italy beach day
Carry-on clothing and accessories for 17 days in Italy

Or:

Day: Black Golf Pants + Beige Linen Blouse + Denim Jacket + Sandals
Dinner: Black shirt dress + Beige Sneakers + Denim Jacket + Hat

Denim jacket layered over a linen shirt for Italy travel
Black shirt dress styled for a 17-day Italy capsule wardrob

Much easier!

And Yes, I Plan to Do Laundry

Here’s the secret to packing for 17 days in a carry-on:

I’m not actually packing 17 days of clothes.

We’ll have access to laundry, so I’ll wash things along the way.

That changes everything.

T-shirts, underwear, socks and active pieces can be washed and reworn, while pants, dresses and jackets can usually go several wears between washing.

I’d much rather spend a few minutes doing laundry in Italy than drag a giant suitcase through airports, train stations, cobblestone streets and little Italian villages.

My Best Capsule Wardrobe Advice for Women Over 50

I’ve realized that packing light doesn’t mean trying to look like someone else—or following every fashion rule.

At this stage of life, I know much more about what I actually like wearing.

I want clothes that are comfortable without looking frumpy, flattering without being fussy, and stylish enough that I feel good when I look back at our travel photos.

My advice is simple:

Try everything on together before you pack it.

Not just individual pieces.

Make the outfits.

Put on the shoes.

Add the jacket.

Try the necklace.

Sit down in the pants.

Walk around in the shoes.

And take pictures!

Seeing these outfits in photos helped me notice which combinations I loved—and which pieces really didn’t need to come along.

Will It All Fit in My Carry-On?

That’s the next challenge!

I’ll be sharing exactly how I pack all of this in my AWAY carry on suitcase, including what I roll, what I fold, what I wear on the airplane and how I make everything fit.

Carry-on clothing and accessories for 17 days in Italy

I’m also going to share some of the outfits from Italy, so we’ll find out together which pieces become my MVPs and which ones I could have left home.

Because there’s always at least one. 😂

Would you try 17 days in Italy with only a carry-on—or would that make you completely nervous?

I am always amazed by people who can create wardrobe capsules. Somehow, my brain just isn’t wired that way! I went to Ireland for 15 days (two were traveling days), and I still took a large piece of luggage. Of course, I didn’t have to do any lugging things around because we were on a tour, and they took care of that. I can’t wait to see how you pack all of this! How exciting! I’ve always wanted to go to Italy. Maybe someday!
