I am excited to share my ruffle lamp shade makeover tutorial with you today. I was pulling things together to decorate and paint furniture for my mom’s master bedroom makeover that you can see here. One thing she needed was a French looking lamp. With hardly any budget I came up with this idea.
Shopping for a French lamp
To find what I was looking for with hardly any budget was going to be tricky. I wanted to find a pretty feminine “French” looking lamp so I went shopping 🙂
I came across this silver mercury looking base at Target. It was such a deal for only $20 bucks. Then I began looking for lamp shades that might work for the French feminine look and feel. Here is a similar looking base.
Trying on lots of different lamp shades made me feel like I was a children’s book. You know the one that says something like this one is too tall, too short, too fuzzy, etc. until I found the one.
This particular lamp shade was white with Grey stripes top and bottom. The only problem was I thought it might look a bit too modern for mom’s room.
I bought it anyway thinking I could add a little sumpin sumpin to it.
Making ruffles for lamp shade makeover
I had some lightweight fabric left over from an Ikea curtain. The fabric was very easy to work with because it was not thick.
To make little flower ruffles to cover the lamp shade I cut out a bunch of 2 – 2 1/2″ circles.
Then I kind of folded in the center of each circle and added a little hot glue to hold it together.
To attach the circle I added another little dab of hot glue and stuck it on the top silver stripe. It doesn’t look like much yet. Once you add lots and lots of these circles they start to look like ruffles.
Make sure to hot glue each one right next to each other almost over lapping them to get that ruffled look.
Once the top stripe was covered with RUFFLES, I decided that was a perfect amount and decided NOT to cover the whole lamp shade. Less is more in this instance.
You can see this little cutie pa-tootie sitting on mom’s newly chalk painted dresser. Ignore the checkerboard farmhouse rug..it will be replaced soon 🙂
The final look of the ruffled lamp shade
Moms was thrilled with how it looked in her room. Sometimes it is the little details that really make a room shine.
Next up- More on the little details you can see the post here.

The mercury glass lamp would have had me figuring out a way to use it too! The shade complements the base and looks so much more feminine now.
I have been gathering ideas for lampshades for awhile. I even have a board on Pinterest for them. Adding this cute one!
