Easy Thanksgiving Tablescape Using What You Have

Easy Thanksgiving Tablescape Using What You Have

Sometimes the prettiest tables come together when you start pulling things out of your cupboards and mixing what you already have!

Last night we had our family over for dinner, and I wanted to create a pretty fall table without spending hours decorating or buying anything new.

I started with a black and white checked tablecloth, gathered some Limelight hydrangeas from my garden, and pulled out my favorite fall dishes. Before I knew it, I had an easy Thanksgiving tablescape that would be just as lovely for the holiday itself!

Today I’m sharing exactly how I put it together, step by step. And here’s the best part — you don’t need everything to match!

What You’ll Need for This Easy Thanksgiving Tablescape

Before getting started, I gathered a few things I already had around the house:

  • Black and white checked fabric or tablecloth
  • Round natural woven placemats
  • Simple white dinner plates
  • Black and white skinny striped cloth napkins
  • Autumn leaf-shaped salad plates
  • Mason jars or small glass vases
  • Limelight hydrangeas or other fall flowers
  • Silver candlesticks
  • Orange taper candles
  • Flatware and drinking glasses — matching or not!

Feel free to substitute whatever you have. That’s what makes this table so easy and affordable.

Step 1: Start With a Simple Tablecloth

I started by covering my dining table with black and white checked fabric.

I love using black and white as a base because it works with practically every season. For fall, it looks especially pretty with orange, rust, green, and natural wood tones.

The checked pattern gives the table a little farmhouse charm without making it feel overly rustic.

My decorating tip: Start with something neutral that you already own. A checked tablecloth, linen runner, or even a simple white tablecloth will work beautifully.

Step 2: Layer Your Place Settings

Next, I placed round natural woven placemats at each seat.

These add wonderful texture and warmth against the black and white checks.

Then I added my simple white dinner plates. I love having white dishes because they go with everything and can be dressed up or down for any occasion.

You can see a few of my other Thanksgiving tablescapes here.

For the next layer, I laid a black and white skinny striped napkin across each plate.

I know, stripes with checks? Yes!

I love mixing patterns, especially when they’re in the same color family. The different sizes of the checks and stripes actually work beautifully together.

Finally, I topped each place setting with one of my favorite orange and rust-colored leaf salad plates.

Aren’t those leaf plates gorgeous? I used them here too.

They bring in all the beautiful fall colors and instantly make the table feel ready for Thanksgiving.

My decorating tip: When layering dishes, use different textures, patterns, and shapes. You don’t need an expensive set of seasonal dinnerware. One pretty accent plate can completely change the look of your table.

Step 3: Make a Simple Centerpiece With Garden Flowers

For my centerpiece, I headed out to the garden and clipped some Limelight hydrangeas.

At this time of year, they’re starting to dry naturally and turn the prettiest shades of soft green, cream, and blush pink.

I placed a few blooms in simple mason jars and arranged them down the center of the table.

No fancy flower arranging required!

I love keeping flowers fairly low so everyone can see across the table and enjoy the conversation.

My decorating tip: Use what you can find in your garden or yard. Hydrangeas, dried grasses, fall branches, or even a few small pumpkins would make a beautiful Thanksgiving centerpiece.

Step 4: Add Candles for a Little Elegance

Next, I added my silver candlesticks with tall orange taper candles.

I love how the orange candles pick up the warm colors in the leaf plates!

The silver candlesticks add just a little elegance to an otherwise casual table.

You could use brass, wood, or glass candlesticks if that’s what you have.

Just remember to keep the candles safely away from flowers and anything flammable.

Step 5: Mix and Match Your Glasses and Flatware

Now here’s my favorite decorating tip, especially if you’re hosting a large Thanksgiving dinner!

You do NOT need 12 matching glasses or 12 matching sets of silverware!

I certainly didn’t have them!

I needed to set the table for 12, so I mixed my silver and gold flatware because I didn’t have enough of either set.

Then I did the same thing with my goblets.

I had some beautiful amber-gold goblets and some green ones, so I used both!

And you know what? I think the table looked even prettier because of it.

The different colors added warmth and sparkle, and the mixed metals gave the table that collected-over-time feeling I love.

My decorating tip: If you’re mixing dishes, flatware, or glasses, repeat the different colors around the table. This makes everything look intentional rather than mismatched.

So don’t run out and buy 12 new place settings just because you’re hosting Thanksgiving!

Open those cupboards and see what you can put together.

Step 6: Enjoy Your Finished Thanksgiving Table!

And there you have it!

An easy Thanksgiving tablescape using things I already owned, a few flowers from the garden, and a little creativity.

I love how the black and white checks make the orange leaf plates stand out, while the natural placemats and soft hydrangeas keep everything feeling warm and welcoming.

For me, setting a pretty table has never been about having the fanciest dishes or the most expensive decorations.

It’s about creating a welcoming place where family and friends can gather, enjoy a delicious meal, laugh, tell stories, and make memories.

And with Thanksgiving just around the corner, I hope this gives you a few ideas for setting your own table without spending a fortune.

Remember, the most important thing around your Thanksgiving table isn’t what matches. It’s the people gathered around it.
