One Black Shirt Dress, 4 Completely Different Looks for Women Over 50

You know I love finding a piece of clothing that can do more than one job in my closet, and this black shirt dress from Amazon is definitely one of those pieces!

At first glance, it looks like a simple black dress—but once I started playing around with it, I realized just how many different ways I could wear it.

I styled it as a long lightweight layer with pants, as a classic black dress, gave it a bright pop of color, and even turned it into a casual sporty outfit with sneakers and a baseball cap.

And honestly, these ideas are just the tip of the iceberg!

The fabric is 100% cotton, but it has a slightly textured look and feel that reminds me of linen. It’s lightweight and comfortable, yet I think this is one of those dresses I could wear almost year-round simply by changing the layers, shoes and accessories.

For sizing reference, I am 5’6″ and about 174 pounds and I’m wearing a size Large.

Look #1: Wear the Black Shirt Dress as a Long Duster

This may be my favorite way to wear it!

Instead of buttoning the dress, I left it completely open and wore it over a black T-shirt and white cropped pants.

I love what that long column of black does. It creates such a nice long, lean line, and I feel very chic wearing it this way.

I added one of my favorite long necklaces to continue that vertical line and draw the eye downward. My flat black leather sandals are incredibly comfortable and add a little European flair.

Add a woven straw bag and I feel like I’m ready to head out and walk the streets of Italy!

There are so many ways you could change the base underneath, too:

  • White cropped pants + black T-shirt
  • Cropped jeans + white T-shirt
  • Black pants + white T-shirt
  • White pants + white T-shirt for an all-white column underneath

That last combination would be gorgeous with the black dress floating over the top.

STYLE TIP: If you carry some weight around your middle like I do, I really like this open-shirt-dress trick. Rather than trying to define the waist, the open dress creates two strong vertical lines down the front.

Look #2: A Classic Black Shirt Dress

Of course, we have to wear the dress the way it was actually intended!

Buttoned up, it becomes an easy, classic black shirt dress. The shape is loose and comfortable and flows away from the body rather than clinging.

This is the kind of dress I could easily wear all day and then head straight out to dinner.

And because the dress itself is so simple, it’s practically begging for a great necklace.

I added one of my longtime favorite necklaces from Coldwater Creek. Mine appears to be sold out, but I’ll link a few similar brown and neutral-toned necklaces below so you can create the same look.

Then I added my old cheetah-print flats from Bandolino. I’ve had these for years and still love the gold-and-black buckle across the toes.

A little animal print with an otherwise simple black outfit is always fun—and since the dress is such a classic, the shoes get to be the star.

Look #3: Add Bright Green and Orange

Okay, this one has a little “Wicked” feeling to it, don’t you think? 😂

I have this fabulous bright green scarf with touches of orange that I’ve owned for quite a while. I tied it close to my neck and suddenly this simple black dress had an entirely different personality.

I added chunky green and orange bracelets to carry those colors farther down the outfit.

And THEN came the shoes!

These green kitten-heel pumps have been sitting in my closet waiting for their moment. Apparently, their moment was a black Amazon shirt dress and a green-and-orange scarf. 😂

I actually love the combination!

Black makes such a great backdrop for bright colors because you don’t need much. A scarf, shoes and a few bracelets completely transform the dress.

Now I’m thinking I need a bright orange handbag to finish this outfit.

Would you wear the green, orange and black combination? I think it would be such a fun fall outfit.

Look #4: Make a Black Shirt Dress Casual and Sporty

This might be the biggest surprise of all.

I added a white baseball cap and sneakers to the dress and suddenly it went from classic to sporty.

And can we talk about the baseball cap for a minute? My hair is finally long enough that I feel like I can wear one without my hair looking strange underneath it. Ha!

I really love this kind of casual look for women over 50. We don’t have to choose between looking put together and being comfortable.

This would be perfect for one of my grandson’s soccer games, running errands, sightseeing or traveling.

I added a pretty fall-inspired necklace from Coldwater Creek with little gold and silver leaves—and even a tiny acorn. It gives the sporty outfit just a little bit of sparkle.

My cream-and-white sneakers are also from Coldwater Creek and are SO comfortable.

The straw bag keeps the whole thing relaxed and casual.

Why I Think This Black Shirt Dress Is Such a Good Wardrobe Basic

What I love most about this dress is that it doesn’t dictate how it has to be worn.

It can be a dress.

It can be a duster.

It can be casual.

It can be dressed up.

It can be sporty.

It can be a swimsuit coverup.

It can be a blank canvas for colorful accessories.

And because it’s lightweight cotton rather than a heavy fabric, I can see myself wearing it through several seasons.

In warmer weather, I’d wear it with sandals. In fall, I’d add flats, loafers or ankle boots. When it gets colder, I could layer something underneath and add a jacket or sweater.

For travel, this would be especially useful because you’re essentially packing two pieces in one—a dress and a long layering piece.

That earns valuable real estate in my suitcase!

Which Black Shirt Dress Outfit Would You Wear?

I had so much fun putting these outfits together because they really show what I love about getting dressed at this stage of life.

I don’t need a closet overflowing with clothes. I’d much rather find pieces that I can reinvent with things I already own.

A scarf I’ve had forever.

An old pair of green shoes.

A favorite necklace.

A straw bag.

A baseball cap.

Suddenly one simple black shirt dress doesn’t feel simple at all.

Now I want to hear from you! Which look would you wear—#1, #2, #3 or #4?

And would you wear the bright green and orange combination? I’m still thinking that orange handbag needs to happen. 😉

Happy shopping! I’ve linked the black shirt dress and similar accessories below.
