I recently found myself inspired by a green pants outfit for women over 50 I saw over on Merrick’s Art—green pants paired with a gray sweater and black boots. I loved the simplicity of it and thought, why not try it with pieces I already own?
So I did exactly that… and learned a little something about what works best for me along the way.

The Green Pants I Keep Reaching For

These green jean-style pants have been hanging in my closet for a couple of years now, and I still really love them. They have a slightly barrel-leg look, sit higher at the waist, and give me plenty of room through the thighs all the way down to the ankle.
That higher rise and relaxed fit is key for me—it’s comfortable, flattering, and easy to style. I’ll link some similar options below in case you’re on the hunt for a pair like these.
First Try: Gray Sweater + Black Chelsea Boots
For my first attempt, I stayed pretty close to the inspiration outfit. I paired the green pants with a gray sweater and my black Chelsea boots, just like the look I saw over on Merrick’s Art. My pants differ from the inspiration picture in that they are not cropped. Maybe that makes a difference? I could probably cuff mine to make them shorter and show off the boot better.

And while it worked… it didn’t quite feel finished on me.
I kept thinking that if I added a scarf with gray, green, and cream tones, it might pull everything together better and soften the gray near my face. A jacket or coat layered on top would probably help too—something cozy that adds warmth and a little more contrast.
Sometimes it’s not that an outfit doesn’t work—it just needs one or two extra layers to feel complete.
What do you think?
Would a scarf and a jacket make this gray-and-green combo feel more “me,” or do you still prefer the warmer cream tones instead? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Second Try: Creamy Turtleneck (And Everything Clicked)
Next, I swapped the gray sweater for a creamy turtleneck from Coldwater Creek and did a simple half tuck.
Instant difference. I styled this turtleneck with a fun sparkly necklace and cute red coat here.

The warmer cream color brightened my face and softened the whole outfit. Suddenly the green pants felt intentional and cozy instead of heavy. Sometimes it really is as simple as choosing a warmer neutral.
Adding a Chunky Knitted Vest to my green pants outfit
Because I can never leave well enough alone 😉, I layered on a chunky cream knit vest I picked up last year from Old Navy.

I love how the texture adds interest and balances out the structure of the pants. It also makes the outfit feel a little more styled, without sacrificing comfort.
Shoes, Hats, and Finishing Touches for green pants outfit for women over 50
With the cream turtleneck outfit, I switched to brown suede boots—and that sealed the deal for me. The brown tones played so nicely with the green pants and creamy layers.

For a fun finishing touch, I topped it all off with my leather bucket hat that I bought in Italy. It adds personality and helps balance the heavier knit vest. Plus, hats are practical in the winter—warm and stylish is always a win in my book.

Do you wear hats in the winter? I think they’re such a fun way to add interest to an outfit while staying cozy when you’re out and about.

Gray or Cream—What Do You Think?
So now I’m curious…
Do you like the gray sweater with the green pants outfit for women over 50, or do you prefer the warmer cream tones like I do?
Leave me a comment—I’d love to hear which version you’d wear!

While the cream would not look good on me, it definitely looks great on you and would be my choice for you. The grey, while quite nice, just doesn’t seem to create a cohesive outfit when paired with the light green slacks. The grey top would look great on me but I wouldn’t pair it with light green slacks…more likely a pair of jeans or a pair of black slacks. Isn’t it wonderful that we all have different tastes and different colors that make us look bright and healthy? The world would be a boring place if we all wore the same style and the same colors, wouldn’t it?
Kim, I totally agree..different colors look great on certain skin tones. The grey and green just didn’t do it for me but it looked great on the inspiration photo. I do like a nice creamy color for a turtleneck sweater for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
