Here’s how I packed a 22-day capsule wardrobe in a carry-on for women over 50. Traveling in Spain and Italy with only a carry-on — and I still felt I looked chic, confident, and comfortable every day. Can I just say how freeing it was to travel through Spain and Italy for 22 days with only a carry-on suitcase? From Barcelona’s cobblestone streets to the olive groves of Abruzzo, I felt comfortable, confident, and put-together without lugging around a heavy suitcase filled with “what if” outfits.

So many women ask me, “How do you travel for that long and still look stylish without packing your entire closet?” The answer: a well-planned capsule wardrobe that mixes, matches, layers, and still leaves room for a pair of cheetah print sneakers.
My European Itinerary (Why the Right Clothes Mattered!)
My trip wasn’t just about sightseeing. It included:
- Touring Barcelona and attending a Flamenco show in a gorgeous theater
- Long dinners and business meetings in Italy
- Exploring medieval castles and ancient towns
- An e-bike ride along the Adriatic Coast
- Hiking up a canyon
- Pizza-making class in Casoli
- Walking through the still-under-construction Palazzo Ricci
- Lunch on a Trabocco (those beautiful wooden platforms over the sea!)
- Climbing stairs, navigating cobblestones, and lots of casual-but-chic walking

Every single day required clothes that could perform — not just look cute for a photo. I needed pieces that breathed, moved with me, resisted wrinkles, and layered easily. One of the most important packing tips is outfits that could be dressed up and worn casually with sneakers. I have linked most of the clothes I wore below but some are sold out so I found similar ones for you below.

Why a Carry-On Capsule Works for Women 50 and Over
This isn’t about trends. It’s about smart layering, color coordination, and versatility. By sticking to a palette of black, white, khaki, olive, and a few statement pieces, I was able to:
- Create 30+ outfit combos
- Transition seamlessly from hikes to dinners
- Stay stylish and practical in unpredictable weather
My Personal Philosophy: Dress for the Woman You Are Now
At 65, I don’t dress to chase who I used to be. I dress to honor the woman I’ve become. My body has changed. My life has changed. And you know what? I’m embracing it.
There is strength in your style, wisdom in your smile, and so much beauty in simply showing up as you. That’s what this wardrobe reflects. Comfort, ease, elegance, and authenticity.
And let me tell you: younger women aren’t judging you. They’re looking at you thinking, “I hope I look that pulled-together and radiant at 65.”
In the Photo Collage
You can see how I styled multiple looks with just a few pieces. The golf pants in tan, green and I threw in a black pair were the workhorses in this wardrobe. Mixing them with cardigan sweaters, jackets and scarves. My black wide-leg pants paired beautifully with a striped tee and black jacket for a business-ready look. The green cropped pants were perfect for casual days, and the denim jacket went with everything.

Travel Tips:
- Roll, don’t fold your clothes
- Always bring a raincoat you just never know what the weather has in store
- Always pack a small stain remover pen
- Scarves weigh nothing but completely change an outfit
- Choose shoes that work with at least 3-4 outfits

What do you do with your dirty laundry while traveling?
Hi Sandra,
Luckily when we are in Casoli, Italy we have access to a washer and dryer but in other places I hand wash and let them dry. The golf pants are very quick dry so they work perfectly. I hope that helps. Thank you for your comment 🙂
